Security mesh for screen doors and for window screens will mean less risk of your home suffering a break-in, and this type of strong mesh will also work well to keep out wildlife, insects, rodents, and other such pests. Strong security mesh will also be more durable against your own pets, if you have large dogs or cats with sharp claws that would otherwise shred standard screen doors or windows. To choose the best security mesh for your home, note a few features to consider and details to look for when shopping.
Material
Steel is typically the best material for a true security screen, as it's stronger than aluminium and any type of plastic. It's difficult if not outright impossible for a would-be intruder to cut through a steel screen, and steel also won't begin to melt and soften under harsh, direct sunlight. Steel also won't show scratches, nicks or other such surface damage, even if the screen should be scratched by your pets or wildlife or if you should nick the screen with lawn care tools.
Coating
While steel is very strong and durable, it can be susceptible to rust if exposed to high humidity levels. It's good to then choose coated steel if you live in the tropics, near a beach and in other such areas with lots of humidity. Look for a powder coating or zinc coating; powder coating can add a certain colour to the steel while protecting it from corrosion, whereas zinc has a standard silver colour but will protect steel from oxidation and resultant rust and corrosion.
Woven versus punched
The mesh of the screen will either be woven or punched. Woven means just that—strands of steel are literally woven together to form a mesh. Punched refers to a solid sheet of metal that then has a design punched through its surface. Each choice is very strong and durable, but note that a woven steel screen will have a bumpier texture because of the weaving process. You might prefer this texture for your home screen, just to add a bit of visual interest.
Punched screens will be flat and may look better in a home with a modern design, as these will have little to no texture and will offer a cleaner look that works better with a modern home. Punched screens may also offer mesh shapes that are difficult to achieve with a woven screen, such as circles or hexagons, so if a certain shape of mesh appeals to you, choose a punched screen.
